Moderate Alzheimer's Disease

Moderate Alzheimer’s disease is typically the longest lasting stage of the disorder.

During this stage individuals may experience:

  • Continued decreased memory in which long term memory may begin to worsen
  • Increased difficulty with word finding/communication; frequent use of wrong word substitutions
  • Challenges with performing familiar tasks
  • Hard time with completing activities of daily living such as dressing or bathing
  • Changes in bladder or bowel control
  • Personality and/or mood changes (irritability, agitation, paranoia, delusions, illusions)
  • Problems with motor movements and coordination
  • Sun downing/increased confusion at the latter part of the day
  • Wandering

Caregiver stress and burden also begins to increase during this stage as the individual declines. It is common for individuals with in the Moderate Alzheimer’s disease stage to be moved into a care facility for increased services and assistance.
